Many reading this will vividly remember the ever-building anxiety of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 as they unfolded that morning and throughout the day.

“What’s happening?”

“This must be a tragic accident.”

“It happened again?!”

“What’s going to happen next?”

“Are my loved ones safe?”

For some, by virtue of their age or the time elapsed since 9/11, they don’t have those memories. They weren’t born, or they weren’t old enough to understand at the time. They’ve been told about the events. They might know all the security we go through is related to that day.

There is one movie I recommend above all others to rekindle the thoughts and emotions of that day, or introduce them to those that didn’t live it. That movie is “Untied 93”. It’s the film account of what happened to the last plane to crash of those hijacked by terrorists. With the knowledge of what happened to the previous three jetliners, passengers and victims on the ground, heroes rose to an occasion they never imagined. They intentionally crashed the plane so it wouldn’t hit the White House or other high value target. They sacrificed themselves to save others.

Here’s why United 93 (directed by Paul Greengrass) is the one film I recommend to “never forget” the terrorist events of 9/11.

“United 93” is a great way to remember the terror attacks of 9/11 because it presents a realistic and emotionally charged account of the events, humanizes the heroes, honors the victims, and underscores the nation’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity. It encourages viewers to never forget the significance of that tragic day in American history.

  • Realism: The film’s documentary-style approach, combined with its accurate portrayal of events, makes it a gripping and authentic retelling of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. It offers a realistic depiction of the chaos and heroism that unfolded on that fateful day. Never does this feel “Hollywood-ized”.
  • Humanizing the Heroes: “United 93” focuses on the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who courageously thwarted the hijackers’ plans, ultimately sacrificing their lives to protect others. By highlighting their bravery and selflessness, the film pays tribute to the ordinary individuals who became heroes in a moment of crisis.
  • Emotional Impact: The film’s intense and emotional storytelling helps viewers connect with the human toll of the attacks. It conveys the fear, confusion, and determination of those on board Flight 93, making the audience empathize with their plight.
  • Honoring the Victims: “United 93” serves as a tribute to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, providing a platform to remember and honor those who lost their lives. It reminds us of the innocent civilians who perished and the profound impact on their families and the nation as a whole.
  • National Resilience: The film underscores the resilience and unity of the American people in the face of adversity. It shows how citizens can come together and take action in dire circumstances, serving as a symbol of hope and strength.

Remembering properly: “United 93” serves as a reminder that we should never forget the events of 9/11 and the sacrifices made by countless individuals. It encourages viewers to reflect on the tragedy and its lasting impact on the world.

NOTE: There is another film with a similar title. This article references the movie “United 93”, not another film called “Flight 93.”
